Are the meanings of El and Elohe in Genesis 33:20 different or the same?
El is the shortest form of the Hebrew word for “God.”
The most frequent form is however the longer variant Elohim, technically plural, but understood to be a “plural of majesty” suggesting the Grand God rather than Gods.
Elohe is just a grammatical variant of Elohim, the so-called “construct state” connecting a noun to what follows: “God of …” Hence Elohe Israel = “God of Israel” or “Israel’s God”.
